Winterfest 2018 in Geneva, Ohio: The Snowman Contest

Winterfest is held in our small town every February. This year, I decided to enter the snowman contest. During the first week of January, temperatures were in the single digits with below 0° wind chills and two feet of snow was falling. I had plenty of indoor time on my hands! I picked up a… Continue reading Winterfest 2018 in Geneva, Ohio: The Snowman Contest

Daytripping to Geneva, OH for Christmas and Crafts 2017

The 2017 craft fair dates are on Saturday, November 11 and 18.  Each year as the wind turns bitter cold and the once green, and then golden, and now brown and falling leaves pile up beneath the big oaks and maples in my back yard, my sister and I kick off the Christmas shopping season with a… Continue reading Daytripping to Geneva, OH for Christmas and Crafts 2017

Northeast Ohio Rocks!

The painted rock craze has come to Northeast Ohio. Painters are hiding their rock creations along walking trails, on beaches, in parks and parking lots.  Hunters, or perhaps just a casual passerby, are finding them at libraries, banks, doctors offices, inside flower boxes, on the edge of picnic tables— anyplace you go you might… Continue reading Northeast Ohio Rocks!

Recycling Cast-Offs Into Handcrafted Garden Benches

Once in a while I manage to interest my husband into building something for me. Over the years, my bookish professor/writer has turned out to be a halfway decent carpenter. With warm weather finally arriving, he wandered into the barn this weekend where he found some cast off pieces to be just right for crafting a… Continue reading Recycling Cast-Offs Into Handcrafted Garden Benches

Make Your Own Handbag Gift Card Holders

This is a fun project that makes a gift card holder in the shape of a handbag. Super cute and way more interesting than those gift card boxes you buy at the store. Step #1: Gather your materials. I chose to use solid color embossed card stock for the body of my bag. For the… Continue reading Make Your Own Handbag Gift Card Holders

Looking Ahead to Garden Art

I'm usually too busy to make garden art during the summer. The dead of winter, however,  is a great time to look ahead and fashion some artwork for the yard. This past weekend I dug around through the pile of scrap wood in the barn and put together and painted this travel sign. It's nothing… Continue reading Looking Ahead to Garden Art

Bringing Back Tradition: the Christmas Card

Who doesn't get a little bit excited when they open the mailbox to find a handful of stiff, hand addressed envelopes in white, red, or holiday green? With mail from January to November being almost exclusively made up of machine generated bills and junk advertisements, finding a hand addressed envelope is rare. When December mail… Continue reading Bringing Back Tradition: the Christmas Card

A Craft Show Project: Fancy Wrapped Nuggets

With just a few days to go until the next Christmas craft show, I've begun to round out my inventory with a few last minute projects. I like having a lot of different items to sell which I think makes my display table more interesting. It's good to include some lower-priced items too, in order to… Continue reading A Craft Show Project: Fancy Wrapped Nuggets

This year I have reserved a table at a local show in Harpersfield, Ohio. Check out our old outhouse project!

There was an old outhouse on our property when we bought it. This summer, in an effort to save it, my husband put on a new roof and gave the outside a coat of paint. Then I went to work on the inside. It isn't really usable. There is no "hole." But it's a great piece… Continue reading Check out our old outhouse project!

Buy Handmade: Christmas Cards and Year-Round Greetings

When I was a kid, everyone I knew had their own way of displaying the dozens of holiday cards that came pouring in during the weeks of December. People might stand them up on the fireplace mantle or along kitchen window sills. My girlfriend's mother taped them to the closet door in their entry hall. My own… Continue reading Buy Handmade: Christmas Cards and Year-Round Greetings

Crafting Christmas: The Ornament Collection Grows

It's now October and I've been working away to fill my Etsy site with ornaments this year. Crafting ornaments is a fun job. The process doesn't tie me down to the craft room and I can make them as I sit in front of the TV. And the response to them has been good. People… Continue reading Crafting Christmas: The Ornament Collection Grows

Crafting Christmas…The Start of the Ornament Collection

It's only August but my craft room is beginning to look a lot like Christmas... I've begun making my inventory of Christmas ornaments.  The bigger the selection, the more people seem to buy. Nothing is more exciting that stepping into a Christmas shop that is filled with sensory overload!  So… Continue reading Crafting Christmas…The Start of the Ornament Collection

“It’s pretty, but it’s so expensive!”– Choosing to Buy Handmade

What determines the price of a handmade item? I've heard it said (or whispered) dozens of times at craft fairs. "It's pretty but it's so expensive!" Yes, handmade items are going to cost more than something you can buy at your local giant discount store.  Mass marketed products that come from China are cheap.  Handmade… Continue reading “It’s pretty, but it’s so expensive!”– Choosing to Buy Handmade
