My Favorite Travel Hat: A Review of Coolibar UPF 50+ Women’s Zip Off Visor Hat

As an avid traveler, I’ve tried lots of different styles of sun hats over the years. They are necessary when you are spending days on the hiking trail or walking around outdoor tourist sites. I’ve always had an issue with them matting down my hair though and I’ve sometimes tried to get away without wearing a hat at all for the sake of good hair. I always ended up sunburnt though and feeling foolish and so, as I’ve grown older, I’ve also gotten wiser. I wear the hat.

I found this hat a couple of years ago. I was reluctant to pay what I thought was a steep price –$39– but I had had no luck finding a hat I truly liked prior to this and so I decided to give it a try. It turned out to be money well spent.

First of all, the hat is well made of a lightweight cotton canvas and comes in several choices of color. I chose the beige which matches most outfits or at least it won’t clash with anything too badly. It’s crushable and returns to its original shape which makes it optimal for packing. It has a nice, thick terry sweat band built in for those extra hot days and it is adjustable in the back which makes it fit well enough that I’m not too worried about it blowing off with a little breeze. You can also unzip it and wear it just as a visor if you want.

The only thing about this hat that I wasn’t sure I liked was the fact that the brim is so much bigger than usual. At first I worried that it might look odd. I almost returned the hat because of it. The more I wore the hat, the more I got used to the look. I was surprised to receive several compliments on it and was questioned about where I had bought it. I’m glad that I kept it because this hat is better than any other I’ve ever had for keeping the sun off. It not only shades your head but will keep the sun off your entire face and ears and even a bit of your neck. As far as sun protection goes, this hat is a winner.
